What is an ORCiD Identifier?

ORCiD stands for ‘Open Researcher and Contributor ID’, and is a free, unique, persistent identifier (PID) for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities.

You can provide your ORCiD whenever you publish a paper, submit data to a repository, write grant proposals, and more. All your publications and research outputs will be uniquely linked to you. Think of this as your academic CV.

Watch this short video created by The Turing Way for more information:

ORCiD is a long-lasting unique identifier for you as a researcher. ORCiDs are 16-digit numbers formatted as 0000-0001-2345-6789. All research objects that you link to your ORCiD will be presented on your personal ORCiD page, e.g. https://orcid.org/0000-0001-2345-6789

Why should you use an ORCiD Identifier?

ORCiD IDs are mandatory for all researchers at the University of Freiburg.

ORCiD provides a persistent, unique identifier for your research output, independent of your name. It ensures all your work (linked via DOIs) remains discoverable and attributable to you, even if you change names or institutions.

You can provide your ORCiD ID whenever you are asked to do so, for example when you provide your author information to a journal during manuscript submission. You grant these trusted organisations (funders, publishers, institutions) permission to automatically update your ORCID record.

You can also use your ORCID ID to:

  • Sign up for or access publisher submission systems
  • Connect to funding management portals
  • Register with data repositories like Zenodo,
  • Sumbit to University repositories such as FreiDATA and FreiDOK+

Adding your ORCID ID to your CV or resume allows others to easily locate and cite your complete research portfolio.
