OpenWebUI is the new web-based interface that allows all members of the University of Freiburg to securely and easily use Large Language Models (LLMs) in administration, studies, teaching, and research. The service is operated by the university’s computer center and meets the highest standards in data protection and IT security. Open WebUI replaces the previous AI service HAWKI, which we will deactivate on December 1, 2025.

Advantages of Open WebUI, initial steps for use, and information on training and data protection can be found in the documentation

Why use Open WebUI?

  • Diverse model selection: Access a growing range of internal models (provided by the data center)
  • RAG – Retrieval-Augmented Generation: Don’t just work text-based, but integrate your own documents, PDFs, or databases – the model provides answers based on your existing knowledge.
  • Custom chatbots: Create specialized bots for your departments, support teams, or research projects in just a few clicks.
  • Data protection + compliance: When using internal models, all data remains within the secure university environment. When using external models, your requests are forwarded to the providers via the university’s central API access.
  • Easy access: No installation required – all you need is an up-to-date browser and a valid university account.
